F.I.T. FROLIC 15 Year Anniversary Party!

Sunday September 25 from 4-7pm at SABROSO in Taos...the FIT FROLIC: Celebrating 15 years of Outdoor Adventures! LIVE MUSIC, FOOD, and DRINKS. YOUTH PHOTO EXHIBIT. RAFFLE DRAWING. Youth in our 2011 summer camps participated in the FIT PHOTO PROJECT, each taking nature photos for one day. Kids nature photos will be on EXHIBIT and for sale. RAFFLE tickets available (prizes include a TSV Millennium SKI PASS, 2 nights LODGING at the Edelweiss Lodge and Spa, a family SWIM and TENNIS MEMBERSHIP at the Quail Ridge, a FAMILY SEASON PASS at Enchanted Forest XC Ski Area, a 6-Month GYM MEMBERSHIP at Northside Health and Fitness Center, a half-day GUIDED ROCK CLIMBING for 2 with Mountain Skills, and more)...drawing at the event at 6:45pm. JULY 4TH RUBBER DUCK RACE!

Our annual July 4th RUBBER DUCK RACE FUNDRAISER is coming up soon. 500 ducks will race down the Rio Hondo in Taos Ski Valley. Fastest ducks win prizes for their sponsors. $5 to sponsor a duck. Picnic and live music to follow. Come join in on the fun! Contact us to sponsor ducks. Support our youth programs!

All summer sessions are currently full. We will gladly take wait list names for all camps! To get on a waiting list, please send a completed registration form (without a deposit). We will notify you immediately if and when space becomes available. More sessions coming for next summer. Thanks!

KID’S BIKE CLINIC!

Join us on Saturday May 14 from 9-noon at the Taos Youth and Family Center for a FREE, community-wide, Kid’s Bike Clinic. All ages and all abilities are welcome. Learn skills and safety on your bike. Bring a bike, helmet, and a parent to sign a waiver. We will have free helmets to give away to those needing one. We will also have a limited number of bikes available to use during the clinic. We hope to see you there!

New Belgium SCAVENGER HUNT MARCH 18th

This event takes place on-snow in Taos Ski Valley on Friday March 18th. Ski or board around the mountain looking for clues. Registration begins at 9am. The hunt is ON at 10am. After-party with awards, swag, and a chance to WIN a pair of custom Fat Tire rocky Mountain Underground skis. $10 per person for teams of 1-4 people. All proceeds go directly to Field Institute of Taos so come join in the fun and support our programs.

Festival of Trees!

Field Institute of Taos has a tree in the popular Festival of Trees event. It was sponsored by Taos Luxury Rental Properties. Our tree looks great with many photos of the kids in F.I.T. programs. Also adorning the tree are bicycle chain rings, rocks (yes, rocks), pine cones, and over $900 in gift certificates! The trees can be veiwed all week and bidding has started. There is a kid’s holiday event on Thursday December 2 with the big event on Friday Devember 3rd from 6-9pm at the El Monte. Come see the tree, bid, if you can, and join us at the parties. Happy Holidays!

2010 Summer Schedule and Registration

The 2010 Summer Camp Schedule is posted. Registration for all summer programs opened March 1. All sessions (except the 2-week Outdoor Explore) still have space. You may download 2010 registration forms from this website. Counselor In Training and Junior Counselor applications are also available at this time and are due by May 1. We are looking forward to our 15th summer of exciting, hands-on adventures in the wilds of New Mexico!

Spring After-School Mountain Bike Programs!

Our Spring mountain biking will get underway the first week of May so sign up now! We will have groups for ages 8 and up. Skills, trail etiquette, and fun. We hope to help develop a love for a lifelong, outdoor sport. Groups are always split by ability. We have bikes and helmets available for those who don’t have their own. Come on out and ride with us!

Team F.I.Taos Organizational Meeting and Party!

Team F.I.Taos, our local, all-ages, all-abilities cycling team, will be having our first meeting and party of the riding season on Wednesday April 7 at Susie and Sean’s house. We will distribute jerseys and plan for the upcoming riding and racing season. Please bring your completed membership paperwork. Tell your friends. We hope to see all the Taos cyclists, young and old, there!

FIT End of Summer PARTY!

We celebrated the End of Summer with a BBQ and pool party at the Quail Ridge Taos on Sunday September 20. Only the hardiest families attended during an electrifying thunderstorm. The winning raffle tickets were drawn. Thank you to everyone for a great summer!

2009 Summer Camp Sessions a HUGE Success!

Our environmental education Summer Camps were filled with enthusiastic, energetic young people as we explored the mountains and valley of Northern New Mexico and beyond. We reached more children than ever with over 180 participants in our summer camps alone. Our Counselors, Junior Counselors, and Counselors In Training worked hard, had fun, and shared their passion for the outdoors with campers every day. If your child was in camp this year (or in the past), you are already on our email and snail mail lists. If you would like to be on our mailing list for future programs, please send us an email with your name and address. We will have our Summer 2010 camp schedule up in February. Registration opens on March 1.

Scavenger Hunt Entertained and Raised Money for FIT!

The New Belgium Brewing Scavenger Hunt in Taos Ski Valley was a truly memorable experience and included a skiing chicken, cowboy, swami, monk, bunny and more! Several participants said it was the most fun they’d ever had on skis (!?!?). We had a good turn-out, in spite of the fact that most locals were either working or in school. The Spring Break visitors really stepped up and helped us out. We had about 120 individuals take part. Lots of sunshine, laughter, and team work. Next year we hope to have the event on a weekend day...

Team F.I.Taos Wraps Up a Great Season!

Check out our blog at teamfitaos.blogspot.com Team F.I.Taos, our local, all ages, inclusive cycling team, recently wrapped up another great season of riding and racing. The Wednesday evening family mountain bike rides went strong all summer (and fall) while the Tuesday evening road rides also proved to be a lot of fun. We had so many podium finishes at so many races (see results page)! Our team continues to grow as we get more families involved in a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. Our membership topped 90 riders this year. We hosted six grassroots events including 3 Hill Climb Time Trials and 3 Short Track XC Races. Thank you to our sponsors! Taos Cyclery, Taos Lending Team, Boot Doctors, Gearing Up Bicycle Shop, Taos Cow, Full Moon Development Company, Taos Ski Valley, Inc., N+1, Sunrise Spinners, Taos Veterinary Clinic, Los Rios River Runners, Angel Fire Family Dentistry, Taos Cycle Club, Sapphire Physical Therapy, Northside Health and Fitness Center, and Pizanos. In 2007, our first season ever, Team F.I.Taos brought home 5 individual New Mexico State Championship titles, secured a bronze medal at the U.S. Masters Track Nationals, placed 3 racers on the overall series podium at the Regional Mountain States Cup Championship Series, and had multiple podium appearances throughout the summer. We had racers wearing the bright green and orange Team jerseys in over 40 different events across the United States. Most importantly, we got families, juniors, and individuals excited about riding and racing as part of a great local team. The 2007 team was comprised of 65 Taos area youth and adults, ranging from beginner to professional. We trained and competed in a wide variety of cycling disciplines including mountain bike, road, cyclocross and track racing. Team F.I.Taos was started as a way to help promote cycling in the Taos area and to help develop the abilities of athletes that make Taos their home. The vision of an inclusive all ages, all abilities, all disciplines team was a lofty one that was reached with families and individuals taking part throughout the summer in weekly training rides as well as traveling to races. This team was visible, professional, and enthusiastic and really made an impression in the region with 15-25 racers at several events in both NM and CO. We received some great publicity for the Team in New Mexico Kids and Mountain Flyer Magazines, and in the Taos News as well as an interview on KRZA! We look forward to a great year in 2009. Join in on the fun!
