School Bike Rodeos
The FITaos School Bike Rodeo program for local schools focuses on safety and basic skills – always presented in a hands-on, active, fun way. This is a great way to give students a super fun outdoor experience at school while learning lifelong skills with peers. Since the school organizes the event with FITaos, all students participate, thus eliminating barriers to access.
We generally set up 5 different stations with experienced coaches leading each one. Topics include rules of the road, proper helmet fit, balance, stopping, turning, and lots of games to practice these skills. We invite any children who have a bike and helmet at home to bring them to school for the day. FITaos brings a trailer of bikes and helmets in all sizes to loan to children who need to borrow them.
Scheduling details depend on class sizes and what the school and FITaos Bike Program Director determine will work best. The schedule for the day generally has each grade participate for 45-60 minutes. In smaller schools, we can combine 2 grades at a time (up to 25 children per group total). We can run up to 7 grades through in one school day, if the school is able to work out a schedule. Many children might not know how to ride a bike yet and we can accommodate them too! We commonly have youth mentors working alongside our coaches at these events and find them to be especially engaging and inspiring for the younger students.
Our cost for a full day school Bike Day event for the 2024-2025 school year is $1200. This covers all pre-event planning and preparation, curriculum, facilitation, event equipment and materials, trained FITaos coaches, loaner bikes and helmets, and post-event wrap up.
